A Poem I Wrote

In case you are not aware. I am taking classes again to finish my bachelor’s degree that I started over 20 years ago. Wow…yes OVER 20 years ago. Hey at least I am going to finish it! Anyhow, of those classes, one of them is a creative writing class where we have to write poems.

I have not written a poem since I was in high school, which seems like ages ago. So I was glad this writing class turned out to be poems. I was hoping it would be about novels, but poems I can live with. The other option was scriptwriting and I am not good with that kind of writing. It is one of those classes that you don’t know what kind of writing you will be doing for the semester until the first day of class.

Anyhow, my first writing assignment was due a couple of weeks ago, I thought I would share it with you. We had to write an “ode” poem about whatever we wanted to write about.

The assignment was due on a Wednesday and here it was Monday and I still had no clue what I wanted to write about. While at work my coworker came to my desk upset, you see her sister passed away from COVID and she was worried about not sending thank you notes out soon enough. She just wasn’t there emotionally yet to be able to write them out. The viewing for her sister was that past Saturday. Her sister would come into work quite often selling homemade tamales, her tamales were amazing! Lia was at my desk getting teary-eyed, I could tell she was about to start crying again. My heart melted for her.

I wrote this poem for her and her family. I wanted to share it with you as well. As you are reading it, think of it from the perspective of a tear; from how you feel on the inside – the build-up, to the tear as it embarks on it’s journey down. I hope you enjoy it.

Piercing sorrow

building up from within;

a heaviness

chest tightening

 expanding out;

suffocation

coming to the surface

from deep inside.

I am alive

 liquid heat flowing;

precipitation dripping

on ashen skin;

freedom

a coldness

streaming down;

a bitterness bleeding

out of her soul;

lingering

on soft pink

 quivering lips;

trembling.

I don’t flow

because

I am weak

or defeated;

my owner

 is strong.

I escape

to give her

the strength

and courage

to continue on.

The next poem I have to write about is supposed to be a “sound” poem. Not sure how that is going to turn out or where the inspiration will come from. Stay tuned…….. 🙂

UPDATE – February 26, 2021

I just got my grade back from the instructor for this poem …. I GOT A 100!!!! I WAS SO EXCITED!!! It helped brighten my otherwise stressful week. My next poem is due Tuesday, I am still struggling to come up with what to write about.

Any ideas???
